Grade 1 - 2015-2016 |
In Grade 1 we begin to study specific authors and illustrators more carefully. We think about different reading media such as, softcover, hardcover, magazines and online books. We also think about whether we're reading stories from the author's imagination (fiction), or researched material that we are reading for information (nonfiction).
We started out reviewing what we know about libraries and remembering (in case we forgot) why it's so amazing to be able to read. We watched Dav Pilkey's Reading Gives you Superpowers and Sesame Street's hilarious Martians Discover a Book and read the books below. We also learned about magazines and what the different magazines in the library contain.
In October, we went to the Public Library to meet
Carolyn Fisher, who wrote and illustrated the Snow Show and illustrated Weeds Find a Way. |
A community member read Stick Man during our Share the Gift of Story week.

November was spent on getting to know Canadian author and illustrator Barbara Reid and her amazing Plasticine illustrations. We got to know her a little, and watched her make her pictures in Creating Picture a Tree, Barbara Reid on Illustrating with Plasticine, and Creating Perfect Snow. We talked about how authors & illustrators collaborate on books. With Gifts and a video of its making, Then we looked at more of Jo Ellen Bogart's books. (Parents will need to get username and password from me, Mrs. K., for a couple of these videos.)
