Grade 7/8 - 2015-2016
This year we have read two novels in library class, with breaks to book-talk new books, introduce the YRCA program, Share the Gift of Story week, find out about the public library's Overdrive and Hoopla apps and their Teen Reading Club and preview some Book Fair books. The novels were chosen for their connection to themes in Social Studies.
Ask Me No Questions by Marina Budhos is an enlightening glimpse into the life of a pair of Bangladeshi sisters, living in New York as illegal aliens over seven years. The class was on their toes as life fell apart and then pieced itself back together for the girls.
A Skype visit with the author, Marina Budhos answered a lot of questions for the students and altogether enriched the experience of the nove. |
Set during the War of 1812, A River Apart by Canadian author Robert Sutherland tells the story of young friends living across the St. Lawrence River from one another, who are torn between their friendship and loyalty to their respective families and countries.
The narrative of well-drawn, sympathetic fictional characters is skillfully set against the backdrop of true history, geography and political boundaries. |
We had a lot of fun at our Share the Gift of Story visit - our community reader read us 4 Christmas stories!
